Luxury flats set for West End

The site of a former school in Dundee’s west end is being cleared to make way for 45 new luxury apartments.

Construction is under way on the land at Bellfield Street, formerly occupied by St Josephs RC primary school.

The building has lain unused since 2008. The new scheme is the first Dundee city centre development for building firm Kirkwood Homes.

Planning permission was granted for the project on June 30 this year.

One of the attached conditions is that electric car charging points must be installed in the parking area.

The flats, described as “two-bedroom luxury apartments”, are expected to go on sale early next year, with prices starting at around £150,000.

Colin Crombie, managing director of Kirkwood Homes, said: “Starting work on our DD1 Hawkhill development marks the beginning of our return to the area, an exciting time for us all.

“This development is our first in the city and we are delighted to be bringing our luxury apartments with the high standard of specification and quality of finish that we have become renowned for to Dundee.

“This is a significant step forward in our growth plans. We have already progressed and expanded into Inverness and the Highlands area and now, with work beginning in Dundee, our homes are being offered across Scotland.”

Meanwhile, Kirkwood Homes will be hosting a public consultation for Ferry residents later this month, regarding another possible new development of 150 homes at Linlathen, tentatively called Balgillo Heights.

Residents will be offered the chance to view the proposals on November 21 at the Panmure Baptist Centre on Lawers Drive, from 3pm to 7pm.

The firm said the scheme would help to meet the “very clear” market demand for new housing in Broughty Ferry.

Previous plans for a similar development in the area were rejected by Dundee City Council’s development management committee, despite being recommended for approval by council officers, last November.
