150-year-old Dundee stables to be converted into luxury lodge

An old stable block in Dundee is to be converted into a unique luxury lodge, with a host of quirky features such as a bed built into a horse cart.

The disused stables at Taypark House on Perth Road will be converted into a six bedroom lodge and entertaining space available for short-term let, and will retain many of its original features.

The plan will see two of the bedrooms built into the hayloft and the courtyard transformed into an open-plan living, kitchen and dining area.

One of the beds will also be built into the original horse stalls and another will be made out of a refurbished cart.

The apartment will also feature a fairy-tale wooden larch bridge leading to a large south facing deck and hot tub.

The stables date back around 150 years and owner Richie Hawkins said he was determined to maintain the history of the building.

He said: “We are currently using the stables for our weekly Christmas market, farm shop and pop-up boutique but once that’s done we will be starting work on the luxury lodge.

“It will be a really interesting space as people will actually be sleeping in these horse stalls. The renovations will also include an open-plan courtyard, a living, kitchen and dining area with a bar, games corner and log-burning stove.

“The six individually designed luxury en-suite bedrooms will take in many of the original features such as stone drinking troughs and flagstone floors. It will be a unique experience for guests.”

Mr Hawkins added the plan was to start the work after New Year and have it completed in time for summer.

Taypark House’s Christmas Market will run at the hotel’s stables area each Thursday up until Christmas.

It has been transformed into a festive
“wonderland” after the council approved a last-minute planning application to use the old stables on the hotel’s grounds.

Local produce makers, crafts people and businesses will showcase products with stalls and free tasting sessions.

Live bands, storytelling and gin and beer tastings are also on offer.
