This year’s Dundee Women’s Festival is set to be one of the biggest ever, with a packed programme of events due to be unveiled.
A Vote For The Future is the theme of this year’s gathering, which will take place over the course of two weeks in March.
This Tuesday will see the unveiling of the full programme of events, which festival chair Prue Watson said would provide something of interest for everyone.
She said: “We are all very much looking forward to this year’s festival.
“Last year’s event was slightly smaller in scale, however this year we will have two weeks of back-to-back highlights spread across more than 40 venues in the city.
“We are expecting 3,000 or so attendees at our events over the course of those two weeks, which will begin with our launch event at the DCA on March 4 and end with our closing ceremony on March 17 in the High Mill in Verdant Works.
“The festival programme has been designed by local artist Laura Darling, who has produced some very exciting works.
“Councillors Lynne Short and Anne Rendall will both discuss working as female politicians in the city and our theme for the festival is a vote for the future.
“This year marks the 100th anniversary of women first having the right to vote and a suffragette theme will be present in a lot of work throughout the festival, but most importantly this whole event will look ahead to the future and the importance of women being figures in public life.”
The opening event at Dundee Contemporary Arts will involve a talk by journalist Lesley Riddoch titled Women and Land – Our Secret History, which will take place on March 4.
Entry to the launch talk is free, but booking is recommended as places will be limited. Tickets can be ordered by emailing dundeewomensfest@gmail.com.
Dundee University forensic expert Professor Dame Sue Black and Duncan of Jordanstone lecturer Janice Aitken will host events during the festival.
Dark Dundee will also be involved with the festival for the first time this year, providing a walking tour based on the story of Grissell Jaffray, the last person in Dundee to be convicted of and executed for witchcraft in Dundee.
The Dundee Women’s Festival will run from March 4-17 and will coincide with International Women’s Day on March 8.
Dundee City Council, Rosa Women to Women and Unite Union are also involved as event partners.
