Football fans have called for a minute’s applause at Dundee FC’s next match in memory of a supporter who died after taking unwell during Saturday’s Scottish Cup clash.
The fan, said to have been in his sixties, needed treatment from paramedics in the final stages of the match against Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday.
Fans at Saturday’s match told of seeing the man take ill, before paramedics arrived and took him to Ninewells Hospital, where he died on Monday morning.
He became unwell while he was in the Bobby Cox stand.
There have been calls to to stage the applause tribute as a mark of respect ahead of the Dundee v Hibs match on Wednesday.
A Dundee FC spokesman said: “Everyone at Dundee Football Club was saddened to hear that the gentleman who was taken unwell at the Inverness game on Saturday had passed away in hospital this morning.
“We would wish to pass on our sincerest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends at this very sad time.
“The family has asked us to respect their privacy at this early juncture and to pass on their gratitude to the club medical staff, first aid, paramedics and stewards who, when called upon, responded quickly and professionally.”
One onlooker said: “You could see there was something seriously wrong by the way the medical people and the stewards were acting.
“They were on the scene really quickly and were doing everything they could.
“It’s really sad to hear the man has died.”
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed that a crew had transported the man to Ninewells Hospital.
She said: “We received a call at 4.40pm on Saturday and attended an incident at Dens Park.
“We dispatched one ambulance to the scene and a man in his sixties was transported to Ninewells.”
Fans took to social media in the aftermath of the incident.
The Dark Blues fan site tweeted: “Our thoughts go out to the gentleman who was attended to by the medical staff and NHS at the game.”
Scott Glashan added: “RIP, no one should ever go to a football match and not come home.”
