A national cycling conference will be held in Dundee this year and is expected to generate over £200,000 for the local economy.
The Cycling Scotland annual conference will take place at the Caird Hall on November 5 and 6 and will play a major part in defining the country’s future cycling strategy.
It will be the first time the charity’s conference has been held in Dundee.
The first day focuses on cycling study tours to highlight examples of positive pro-cycling projects across the area and on the second day more than 200 professionals and campaigners will arrive to discuss the future of active travel in Scotland with Transport Minister Humza Yousaf.
Jennifer Fingland, Cycling Scotland policy officer, said the conference will focus on developments in Tayside and across the country.
She said: “This will be the first time Cycling Scotland has held its annual conference in Dundee and we are really excited to see and hear about some of the great work being done in the Tayside region to encourage active travel.
“The developments seen in the city along the Riverside, the arrival of the V&A and the University of Dundee being recognised as one of the first cycle friendly campuses in Scotland all stand to help get more Dundonians cycling for everyday journeys.”
The stops on the study tours are yet to be decided but when the conference was held in Perth in 2016 delegates were shown the link between Dundee’s Waterfront and Broughty Ferry to highlight how cycling can be integrated into large-scale regeneration projects.
In addition to developing a strategy to improve routes across the country, the conference will also explore how to get Scots of all ages cycling more often.
Karen Tocher, business tourism manager at Dundee & Angus Convention Bureau, added: “I am delighted that Cycling Scotland have chosen to host their annual conference in Dundee in November 2018, and we’re looking forward to welcoming over 200 delegates to the city.”
She said that should generate over £206,000 for the local economy.
