A massive spectacle featuring music, dancing, art and design has been announced for the opening of Dundee’s V&A museum.
More than 20,000 people are expected to descend on the city in September, when Scotland’s first museum of design opens its doors to the world.
The 3D Festival – which pays homage to Dundee, design and the city’s spirit of discovery – will be promoted and executed by the country’s largest events company DF Concerts.
The brains behind T In The Park and Transmit Festival will work alongside young people from across the city and further afield, creating an event which will sprawl across Slessor Gardens towards the front doors of Kengo Kuma’s visually stunning V&A museum building.
Details of who will grace the stage on the eve of the museum’s opening are being kept closely under wrap, however organisers promise the two-day event will feature a feast of dancing, singing, music and art.
Maryam Deeni, a member of V&A Dundee’s Young People’s Collective, said: “This is an opportunity for us to do something great and we want everyone to feel part of it.
“The opening celebrations will show off the new museum and will be a chance to highlight the great things that have been going on in Dundee for a long time.
“The festival will be a combination of what the city is proud of and the exciting things still to come.
“It’s been awesome being part of V&A Dundee’s Young People’s Collective, a group that is really enthusiastic and passionate about the city.”
2018 has been designated the Year of Young People by the Scottish Government. Dundee City Council leader John Alexander said it was entirely right that the city’s youngsters were leading the charge.
He said: “This is an exciting time for our city and we are building an unprecedented international profile ahead of the opening of V&A Dundee.
“In the Year of Young People, it is so inspiring to see that young people themselves are playing a central part in the celebration plans.
“This event will capture the spirit of innovation and ambition that is driving Dundee ahead.”
The two day event will take place September 14-15.
