A historic Dundee factory will be demolished after councillors backed plans for a housing development on the site.
Crieff-based F&H Developments wants to transform the site of the former Tay Rope Works on Magdalen Yard Road into five three-bedroom houses and two three-bedroom flats with parking, amenity space, a new access and environmental improvements at the site.
Five objections were lodged, citing a “detrimental impact on privacy through overlooking”, “overshadowing” and “increased noise and odours from bin store”.
Other objections focused on a “detrimental impact on parking provision and road safety” and a “detrimental” impact on the surrounding area due to the use of the proposed properties as HMOs and the felling of trees.
However, the plans, which include demolishing and reconstructing the well-known facade, were unanimously backed by members of the city’s planning committee.
West End councillor Fraser Macpherson said the council had provided “assurances” that the issues concerning objectors would not materialise.
He said: “This site has been unused for a great number of years – certainly for the 17 years I’ve been with the council, it has been derelict.
“I sought assurances regarding the issues that have been raised in the objections and I am satisfied with the response.
“This area has been an eyesore, a dumping ground and there have been incidents with youths entering the property.
“The site needs a bright future, which is why I voted to grant planning permission for the proposal.”
The works, in the West End Lanes Conservation Area, has a history of planning applications for residential developments dating back to 1993 but none have so far come to fruition.
