NHS Tayside is to mark the 70th anniversary of the National Health Service with a series of events next month.
An exhibition in Ninewells Hospital will be one of a series of events to mark the anniversary.
The NHS was founded in 1948 based on the principle of healthcare provided free at the point of need.
On Thursday July 5 – 70 years from to the day since NHS came into being – there will be cake-cutting ceremony wit a cake donated by Frank Esposito, owner of the cafe and Take Away on Level 7 at Ninewells.
A photographic exhibition looking back at the development of the NHS over the past seven decades and former hospitals in the region will also open on July 5.
NHS Tayside Chief Executive Malcolm Wright said: “Across NHS Tayside we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the creation of the NHS and there are events planned that will bring together public, staff and patients in celebration.
“The displays at Ninewells capture the developments in healthcare will really bring home to us all just how much the health service has improved over the previous seven decades, with previous innovations and pioneering surgical techniques now becoming part of our patients’ everyday treatments.
“Whilst it is right to focus on the 70th anniversary celebrations, it is important to remember that it is our staff who really are the backbone of the NHS and made the service what it was before, what it is today and what it will be in the future.”
The commemorative 70th display will capture many of the changes and developments in services provided by NHS Tayside over the last seven decades.
It is hoped that, weather permitting, this will be on view outside the main entrance to Ninewells between 1 and 4pm. Over following weeks the display will be taken to various sites across Tayside.
There will also be a “Trip Down Memory Lane” display on the main concourse of Ninewells, featuring old photos and items including old nurses’ uniforms.
Oor Wullie iced biscuits are also on sale at Ninewells, helping to raise funds for the Archie Foundation’s Tayside Children’s Hospital Appeal.
On July 5, NHS Tayside canteens will be giving staff, visitors and patients a taste of the past by offering a typical menu from 1948 – including liver, tripe and kale – alongside the regular 2018 fare.
Other NHS Tayside sites, including Stracathro Hospital and Whitehills Health and Community Care Centre in Forfar will host fundraising tea parties.
There will also be a light display marking the anniversary beamed onto the exterior of Thorntons Solicitors on Yeaman Shore.
