Dundee’s new train station has a piano for anyone to play on – and there’s a heartwarming reason why

Passengers at the new-look Dundee railway station will be able to keep their fellow commuters entertained thanks to the donation of a piano.

Following in the footsteps of Edinburgh and Glasgow, people departing from or arriving at the City of Discovery will be able to pass the time by playing music for all to hear.

Dave Patterson

The new rail station welcomed passengers for the first time on Monday morning following a £38 million transformation, coinciding with the opening of the new Sleeperz Hotel.

The piano was donated to the station by local man Dave Patterson, 84, in memory of his wife Jean. The music-lover died in February following a battle with Alzheimer’s.

Jean retired from Dundee Station 25 years ago, having spent much of her career working in admin with ScotRail.

Dave bought the piano from Vintage Strings on Perth Road.

A plaque on the instrument reads: “Strike a few chords in memory of Jean Patterson and her happy times here with ScotRail colleagues.”
