Plans for a new £6million flats development and retail complex in Dundee city centre have been revealed.
A new building, containing 43 flats, shops and a restaurant, will be constructed beside the former Henderson jute mill on Marketgait, if the proposals are given the go-ahead by city planners.
The new complex would also have charging points for electric vehicles.
Brunton Design has had “extended discussions and negotiations” with Dundee City Council and will submit a planning application in the coming months.
Alan Mudie, of Brunton Design, said: “We have been in discussions with the local Dundee authority for about two years now.
“Their officials have been unfailingly helpful and enthusiastic. It’s great to be putting forward plans for such an important building outside the waterfront.
“Initially it was going to be just flats, but the council were keen on having a retail unit on the ground floor. They are keen on having something like Pizza Express there, which may or may not happen – it will be a retail unit, but we don’t know who will move in yet.
“Previously there have been proposals to build a hotel on that site, but planners have not been keen on this. There has been a lot more appetite for a flats development.”
Mr Mudie added that the apartment block would take account of the neighbouring listed building.
The site, currently occupied by a Shell filling station is next to the former Henderson jute mill, one of the few Dundee mills to be designed by architects rather than engineers.
Re-built in 1873 following a fire, the mill is now a B-listed structure.
Mr Mudie said: “We are of course aware of the sensitive setting and have been very careful to take account of this in our design.
“We aim to produce a contemporary building, using environmentally-friendly material, construction methods and energy sources.”
