There were scenes of jubilation in Dundee’s pubs on Wednesday night following Croatia’s victory over England.
Watering holes across the city were packed for the World Cup semi-final, which Gareth Southgate’s men lost 2-1.
Though there were many people cheering on England in the City of Discovery, plenty locals chose to back Croatia over Scotland’s “Auld Enemy”.
And football fans at the Post Office Bar in Broughty Ferry put their own spin on the famous Euro ’96 English football anthem Three Lions by The Lightning Seeds.
Locals were heard chanting “England’s going home, they’re going home” at the close of the game.
Hopes had been high after an incredible free kick from Kieran Trippier put England 1-0 up at half-time.
Ivan Perisic levelled to make it 1-1 in the second half. Mario Mandzukic then scored in extra time to put Croatia ahead.
Scottish support for the English squad had the been the subject of much debate across the country throughout the World Cup.
Prince William took to the official Kensington Palace Twitter account to hail the England side following the defeat.
The Earl of Strathearn said: “I know how disappointed England must feel right now but I couldn’t be more proud of this team and you should hold your heads high.
“You’ve had an incredible World Cup, made history, and gave us fans something to believe in. We know there is more to come from this England team.”
Croatia will face France in the World Cup final on Sunday.
