Police launched an investigation after residents of a Dundee housing estate claimed a ‘suspicious’ car had followed children home.
Residents of Lewis Terrace in Mill O Mains were forced to contact police after children returning from nearby shops said a silver car had apparently slowly tailed them down Hebrides Drive past the new play park in the area.
And a second incident involving the same car saw a boy run home after two men reportedly ‘stared’ at him while he walked to his grandmother’s house nearby.
After being confronted by parents, the occupants of the car reportedly offered to show ID but then fled when residents threatened to call the police.
Officers who investigated sought to reassure locals, describing the incident as a “false alarm” and finding it was unlikely the car had followed the children.
Mum Jodi Thom said she raised the alarm after her panicking son arrived home.
Posting on Facebook, she said: “My 11-year old-son and his friend came in at about 9.40pm (on Monday) after being to the shop to get sweets.
“As they were coming back through Mill O Mains past the new play park they saw a silver VW estate car.
“The car followed them through the streets of Mill O Mains right to my house.”
After confronting the two men in the car about why they were there, Jodi said the pair seemed suspicious.
She added: “The guy got out the driver side and said he can show ID (but) when we shouted to phone the police, they reversed out the street and took off.”
A police spokesperson said: “Police Scotland attended in the Mill O’Mains area of Dundee about 10.30pm on Monday July 23 in response to information regarding a silver car being seen in suspicious circumstances.
“Enquiries were conducted, and this appears to have been a false alarm with good intent.”
