Music buffs have a rare opportunity to own a unique instrument as one of Caird Hall’s two pianos has been put up for sale.
The Grotrian-Steinweg Model 200 A254 Boudoir piano has now been classed as “surplus to requirements” as they look to buy a new one – but the hall simply doesn’t have the space to house three pianos.
The instrument was bought from now-closed Hans Music in Edinburgh in the 1930s and was refurbished about 30 years ago, leaving it in good condition for its age.
While a litany of big names have played the Caird Hall over the years, no record of which artists who have actually played the piano has been kept.
Some of the stars who have played the venue include David Bowie, Queen, Radiohead, The Cure, The Smiths, Gary Barlow and, of course, The Beatles.
Up until the advent of keyboards, artists would usually play the house piano rather than transport their own, one exception being Elton John – who is known for standing on his piano.
The instrument is available for viewing, and the chance to try out a few chords, on Monday August 27.
