A leading gaming academic has said Dundee remains at the heart of the industry as a major awards event draws near.
The first UK Games Fund Awards, hosted in collaboration with DC Thomson Media Events and in association with 4J Studios, will celebrate rising talent in UK gaming.
Organisers say the event will help to shine a light on Dundee’s vibrant games development heritage and its future potential.
Dr Dayna Galloway, head of the division of games and arts at Abertay University, said: “Dundee is a world-renowned hub for the games industry and it’s fantastic that the city continues to capitalise on that success.
“The video games market is highly disruptive and to keep pace with changing customer trends and emerging platforms it is vital for games studios to stay agile – the Dundee cluster has been particularly good at achieving that.”
Dr Galloway said Abertay tailored its courses in response to the games market to ensure graduates leave with the right skills to go straight into employment, in Dundee, elsewhere in the UK or with companies across the world.
“Due to the collaborative way we teach game development – artists, designers, and programmers working together on challenging creative briefs – our students gain experience of what an industry environment is like and many of them go on to form their own companies straight after university,” Dr Galloway added.
“This talent pipeline forms the lifeblood of the Dundee games industry and it’s pleasing to see it in such great health.”
Shortlisted nominees will be offered the chance to visit Dundee, attend a welcome reception at DC Thomson Media’s headquarters in the city and take part in a lavish awards ceremony at the Apex Hotel on November 14.
