A Hungarian man who “fell in love” with Dundee has created a “sticker pack” for mobile phones featuring iconic locations and phrases from the City of Discovery.
Bence Dávid, from the Hungarian city of Szombathely, has been living in Scotland since 2010, originally for an art course in Edinburgh.
When a relationship brought him to Dundee, he said it was the “first time he ever felt truly at home”.
The 28-year old, who wants to be a full-time mobile phone app developer, created “stickers” for iPhones dedicated to Dundee, which can be used in a similar way to emojis.
They feature the likes of the Law, Discovery, Lochee Stack and V&A and phrases like bridie-ordering staple, “an ingin’ ain an’ a'” and the ubiquitous “eh”.
He’s now asking for locals to suggest fresh examples he may have overlooked for an update to the Dundonian Scottish Stickers.
Bence said: “I love the accent and the banter of people in the city.
“I really thought people would love this idea. I really love the particular things people say in Dundee. The stickers are visual and freshen up a chat.”
As he is Hungarian, Bence admits there may be some phrases he may have missed and is looking for locals to make suggestions, either through his Facebook page or website.
Bence added: “I am really hoping people will send there local dialects. Once a suggestion is made it is fairly easy to add to the pack. That could be done within a couple of days.”
Bence lived in Dundee for two years, but moved to Glasgow in August.
During his time in Dundee, Bence worked in Tradeprint. A colleague, Malcolm Miller, was a particular inspiration for his love of the dialect.
Bence said: “Malcolm is very local and said the best and funniest things at work. As I sat next to him for about two years, I picked up a lot from his expressions and even some of his accent.
“Hungarians are infamous for not being able to lose their accent while speaking English, but I picked up so much of his that a couple of times American tourists have thought that I was Scottish.
The sticker pack is currently only available on the iStore, but Bence hopes to one day have it on Android devices as well.
