More than £6000 has been raised by hundreds of Dundee cyclists in the annual charity Cyclathon.
More than 300 riders pedalled their way around the city to raise cash for this year’s chosen charity Marie Curie, as well as a number of other local charities.
The success of the 15th annual Rotary Club of Claverhouse event, which took place on Sunday September 9, was celebrated at Dundee City Council’s Chambers this week.
Families, individuals and groups from city clubs, organisations, schools and colleges were all recognised for their endeavours in completing the 26 mile Green Circular Cycle Route.
Lord Provost, Ian Borthwick, said: “Congratulations to all the cyclists who took part to raise much needed funds for local charities.
“Dundee has invested in improving the Green Circular Cycle Route to provide enjoyment and satisfy the needs of the ever increasing number of cyclists in the city.”
Morgan Academy were the winners of the Dundee Cyclathon Schools Cup, awarded to the school raising the most money.
The cheques, totalling £6,500, were handed over to the charities at the ceremony by the Rotary Club of Claverhouse, Menzieshill Whitehall Swimming and Water Polo Club, Grove Academy, Morgan Academy, Dundee Sea Scouts and Police Scotland.
Petra MacMillan, patron of Marie Curie, added: “Cycling events are now becoming one of the most popular and effective ways of raising money for charities like Marie Curie.
“Thank you everyone for boosting our funds to allow us to do so much more in the area.”
Ian Balgowan, president of the Rotary Club of Claverhouse, spoke of his delight with the amount raised.
He said: “Cyclathon 2019 will be even bigger and better than in the past.
“We have already started to plan next year’s event which is an ideal vehicle for charities, clubs, organisations and individuals to raise money.
“I am pleased to announce that Mark Beaumont, the well-known British cycling legend and record breaker for cycling around the world, will be helping us to promote and support our Dundee Cyclathon in 2019.”
