A brazen thief duped staff at a plush city hotel before breaking into lockers in the building’s swimming pool and stealing hundreds of pounds worth of contents.

Police are investigating after a man, wearing grey jogging bottoms and a hooded top, told staff at the front desk of the Double Tree by Hilton he had left his wallet in the changing rooms.

He then broke into the lockers of people using the leisure facilities and stole their valuables.

Car keys, money, clothing and other items including smart phones and purses are all understood to have been taken by the crook.

It is believed shocked guests were then told they would not be receiving any form of refund or compensation.

The gym and pool is maintained and operated by 7 Hospitality Ltd on behalf of the hotel, which is situated close to the “Swallow” roundabout at the A90 Dundee to Perth dual carriageway.

A spokesperson for the organisation said: “We can confirm that a theft of personal belongings did take place at the hotel’s leisure club and that the matter is subject to a police investigation.

“The safety and security of our guests is a key priority and the hotel has security procedures in place which are designed to safeguard hotel guests and members as well as paying members of the public.

“As there is an ongoing investigation we cannot comment further at this time.”

The daylight robbery took place on the afternoon of Sunday November 4.

Officers are actively investigating the incident.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We are aware of the reported thefts and are carrying out enquiries.

“We would like to trace a man described as white, in his twenties, about 5 foot 6 inches tall and of medium build.

“He was wearing a grey hooded top, grey jogging bottoms and a dark baseball cap in connection with them.

“If anyone has any information that could assist us, please call 101 and quote reference number CR/27016/18.”

A session at the pool costs £10 per adult for non-members and £5 for children, while an annual pass to the gym is valued at £395.
