Dundee chef’s accent in top Netflix cooking show so broad it had to be subtitled

A Dundee chef starring in a television cooking show has been subtitled because of his strong Scottish accent.

Graham Campbell, chef director at the Castlehill restaurant on Exchange Street, did not know his dialogue in Netflix series, The Final Table was going to be subtitled until all episodes were placed on the streaming service.

However, the Oban-born chef did suspect it could happen.

“I kind of thought it was going to happen because my Scottish accent is quite strong,” the 36-year old said.

“It’s because I am from the west coast. I think it’s quite funny and I’m not bothered by it at all.

“They’ve done a lot for me. They’ve not done it in any derogatory way.

“The show has given me a great boost. My Instagram account increased by nearly 2,000 followers since it went on Netflix.”

In the Final Table, chefs from all around the world compete against each other to impress the judges. Graham was the only one who’s speech was subtitled.

It’s not Graham’s first television appearance. In 2015 he starred in the BBC’s Great British Menu, in which British chefs from across the UK competed to produce the best menu.

At just 25 years old, he became the youngest ever Scottish chef to be awarded a Michelin star — the international mark of distinction.

“It’s off the chart to go from being a local chef to doing national shows and then international ones,” he added.

“I’ve had the chance to compete against two or three Michelin-star chefs and that’s incredible.

“It shows what you can actually do when you put your mind to it.

“When I got my Michelin star I was part of a small percentage of Scottish chefs who have one, but there are more Michelin star restaurants in London alone than Scotland so it’s great to have been on the show and represent Scotland.

“I went into the show determined to give it my all and put everything I have into it. What you see there is the real me and that’s where my passion comes from. I think that’s partly why my accent has come through so strong.”

All episodes of The Final Table became available on Netflix on November 20.
