Police in Dundee are investigating after a man died following a city centre disturbance in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Officers were called to the Nethergate area of the city around 1.15am following reports of a disturbance involving a large number of people.
Police found an injured man in the area and he was taken to Ninewells Hospital where he later died of his injuries.
A spokesman for Police Scotland’s Tayside Division said the man’s death is being treated as “unexplained” and inquiries into the circumstances leading to his death are underway.
The man’s identity is yet to be established.
Police have sealed off a large area of the road in front of the City Churches.
A number of wheelie bins have been knocked over and two small forensic tents – used to cover up potential evidence – have been set up on the pavement.
The cordon has been set up just yards from the Nethergate taxi rank.
Detective Inspector Ross Fitzgerald said: “We know that a number of people were in the area around the time of this incident, which happened on Nethergate close to the Overgate Shopping Centre.
“We would ask anyone who witnessed any disturbance or who has any other information which could assist the police investigation to come forward if you haven’t already spoken to an officer.
“A police presence is likely to be maintained in the area for some time while enquiries continue and the public are thanked for their patience and understanding.
