Residents are being warned to be on guard as police advise that bogus workmen may be operating in the Broughty Ferry area.
Two men arranged to do work on a garden wall for an elderly couple aged 84 and 91 at a house on Redcastle Crescent.
The couple paid £400 on Monday, March 25, and the workmen did about 20 minutes of cosmetic work, which was of a poor quality, and then left.
Then a few days later a resident living nearby was door-stepped by a group of four men and they agreed to do work on his drive and he paid them £4,000.
This was also of a poor standard although no formal complaint was made.
There have been further reports of this group knocking on doors offering to do work but with no success.
Bogus workmen often target areas with a high number of elderly residents. They knock on doors and offer services.
They often ask for money upfront and may even have flyers that look quite professional.
If anyone attends your door and you feel unsure or unsafe do not answer it and contact Police Scotland on 101.
