Dundee United’s Swedish striker Osman Sow was detained by police in his homeland on suspicion of money laundering.
The 28-year-old former Hearts player was detained along with another unnamed person at Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport on Saturday.
Sow and the second person were interrogated by police for several hours but have both since been released.
The cash being carried through the airport was seized by police.
It has been reported Sow and the second person may have had as much as £150,000 in cash upon them.
Although Dundee United have refused to officially comment on the case, a source was quoted in The Daily Record suggesting the sum being carried was less than 10% of the reported figure.
Sow, who has not featured for the Tangerines since their defeat by Partick Thistle last month, is expected to return to the side for Friday’s game against Ayr United.
A spokesman for Swedish police is reported to have said: “The money was seized.
“They are both accused of fraud and/or money laundering.
“The investigation is ongoing and the most important question is to determine where the money came from.”
Sow was signed by United from MK Dons in January in a bid to bolster the team’s promotion push.
But injuries have limited him to just five appearances so far.
