Cyclist’s gruelling challenge raises £6,000 for sick children

The sunshine turned out to welcome charity cyclist Ross Duncan home this weekend as he completed an arduous 124-day fundraising challenge.

Ross pedalled from Dunfermline to Rachel House hospice in Kinross in the final legal of his gruelling mission to raise money for Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) by cycling 124km per day for 124 consecutive days.

The Dunfermline-based IT technician, who completed the cycle while still working full time, was happy to see the sun in the sky after battling through temperatures of -8.5 degrees and 55mph crosswinds during his time on the bike.

As he crossed the line, CHAS fundraisers confirmed he had raised more than £6,000 and had broken his own cycling target by an average of around 24km per day.

He rode the distance outdoors and using online training tool Zwift.

Ross, originally from Broughty Ferry, said he “couldn’t help” but put in the extra distance.

“The support has been tremendous and I’ve appreciated the camaraderie with fellow riders sharing some of the miles on the road and in the virtual world since I started this back in December,” he said.

He said he was “so happy” to have exceeded the target mileage, adding: “It was lovely to finally meet some of the families that this money will benefit at Rachel House today.

“I’m sincerely thankful for all the contributions made by family, friends and by sponsors on both side of the Tay Bridge; I know the ultimate total will go a long way towards the CHAS cause.

“It has been a tough and enjoyable challenge, somehow balancing work with being on the bike for so long.”

CHAS provides palliative care for babies, children, young people and their families.

Fellow cyclist, and round the world adventurer, Mark Beaumont, paid tribute to Ross’s achievement.

“It’s wonderful to see the massive effort from Ross on his endurance cycle,” he said.

“Much like Ross’s mileage, I’m sure his fundraising efforts will go a very long way.”

Laura Campbell, from CHAS, thanked the “fundraising powerhouse”.

She commented: “Ross’ incredible mission is nothing short of inspiring. To date, he has raised more than £6,000 with donations still pouring in which will make a fantastic difference to the families who need us.

“Well done Ross and put your feet up for a well-deserved rest.”
