A woman living with cancer is preparing to take part in an annual fundraiser for a Dundee support centre.
Marie Downes, 45, has breast cancer and has been visiting Maggie’s Dundee for the past four years.
Ms Downes is hoping to take part in the annual Culture Crawl — a 10k evening walk that will take in views of Dundee landmarks.
Starting at the V&A, those taking part will make their way through the city with exclusive night-time access to some of Dundee’s cultural icons including the Transport Museum, the McManus, Verdant Works, the DCA and the Logie and St John Church.
The route will include entertainment from jazz duo Let the Bird Out and exhibits from artist Alison Chandler and photographer Zoe Law.
The walk will come to an end at Maggie’s Dundee itself, where participants will be given a celebratory glass of Prosecco and pizza.
Professional musician Marie hailed the confidence she has gained by visiting Maggie’s.
“I didn’t go to Maggie’s when I was first diagnosed but began to visit regularly when my cancer came back four years ago,” she said.
“Maggies’s is an amazing place. I only wish I had found it sooner.
“It’s such a safe, calming environment. It feels almost unworldly on the grounds of Ninewells because it’s just so relaxing.
“The people at Maggie’s are a real inspiration, they have given me the confidence to go back to work and enjoy teaching and performing. Over the last couple of years, I’ve performed three recitals to give something back to the charity.
“Maggie’s helps you see that life goes on even after a cancer diagnosis. My son James is getting married soon and along with my three daughters Olivia, Juliet and Clara we’re all very excited.
“I was afraid to come to Maggie’s in the beginning but everyone who works for them is very caring and helpful and you can forget about cancer and just be a normal person.”
Lesley Howells, head centre of Maggie’s Dundee, said: “Discovering our city as the sun sets and taking in its sights and cultural gems is becoming a calendar highlight.
“I really hope the local community gets behind this event to help us support as many people living with cancer, as well as their family and friends, across Scotland.”
The walk, sponsored by Brodies LLP, will take place on August 30. To take part, visit the Maggie’s website.
