Barry Deick, 29, of Scotscraig Grove, Dundee was ordered to carry out 220 hours unpaid work and placed on supervision under a one-year CPO.
He was previously found guilty after trial at Forfar Sheriff Court of behaving in a threatening manner towards his partner at McLagan Road, Carnoustie on September 12 last year.
Sheriff Murray told the accused: “You were drinking heavily and abusing cocaine.”
He said the victim’s reluctance to give evidence against Deick at trial was “a consequence of the degree of control you sought to exert over her.”
“There is, just, an alternative to a custodial sentence,” said the sheriff.
