A Dundee councillor has slammed the “disgusting mess” that greeted visitors to the city at the weekend.
While preparations for Saturday’s Tom Jones concert were under way, the area outside Dundee’s new railway station was covered with litter and the escalator was out of order.
Councillor Craig Duncan said the city council and Scotrail needed to work together so Dundee could “up its game” as it aims to become a top tourist destination.
He said: “I was catching the train on Saturday morning and was disappointed with the state of the area.
“With preparations for the Tom Jones gig well under way, visitors to Dundee are met with this disgusting litter-strewn mess outside the rail station.
“Those attempting to depart the city are met an out-of-action escalator.
“The council can’t be everywhere 24/7, but with a major event like that they need to have more litter patrols and collections, perhaps working with Scotrail.
“Dundee is becoming a big visitor destination so it needs to up its game.”
A ScotRail spokesperson said customers were able to use the lift or stairs while the escalator was being repaired.
He added: “We’re sorry to our customers for the inconvenience caused while one of the escalators at Dundee station is out of service.”
A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “The bins in question were checked twice by our staff on Saturday.
“Our mobile unit disposes of refuse and provides bin checks on a daily basis. The team’s number of visits to Dundee Train Station are increased during the week.
“We continue to encourage residents to use the corresponding bin for discarding litter.”
