Discussions are to take place to explore creating greater links between Dundee city centre and the Waterfront by implementing more pedestrianised routes.
Russell Pepper, of OpenClose Dundee said the car park space behind Caird Hall could be used to give nearby pubs and restaurants extra outdoor seating.
He said this, coupled together with pedestrianising Castle Street and Exchange Street could be a “great way to encourage people from the Waterfront to the city centre”.
Council leader John Alexander said it was something the local authority had previously examined and agreed to meet with Mr Pepper.
Mr Pepper compared the area to the town square in the Dutch city Delft, which was used for car parking until businesses filled the spaces with dining tables.
Mr Pepper said following that example could be the first step towards removing cars from the city centre, citing Oslo’s recent phasing out of city centre car parking as a “great success”.
He said: “It could be done very cheaply to begin with. Simply remove cars and add some benches, tables and plants.”
Mr Alexander said: “It would be nice to have a continuation of the pedestrianised City Square, back of Caird Hall, Slessor Gardens and then Waterfront Place.
“I’m always interested in ideas and approaches that Dundee can learn from.
“I want our city to be the best it can be, leading the way and approach issues with future generations and the climate in mind.
“Our work on a low emission zone is ongoing alongside other work in this area. Our ambition is only limited by the funding available.”
