A group of young LGBT equality campaigners hope to create the “biggest human rainbow flag Dundee has ever seen”.
Setting off from Dundee on Sunday at 10.30am, more than 130 people will complete a sponsored walk across the Tay Road Bridge to Newport each waving a colour from the rainbow.
It is being organised by the Dundee branch of LGBT Youth Scotland and is to raise funds for the organisation and promote equality.
The organisation’s head of partnerships Jane Griffin said the youngsters were influenced by a local primary school in their designs for the event.
She said: “Downfield Primary hosted an amazing ceremony when they were given an LGBT Charter in recognition of their work in equality.
“Lots of the kids were holding a coloured placard. It looked so nice and it was so visual.
“Sunday’s event will look a bit like that. We’ve asked everyone to wear a certain colour from the rainbow but coordinating that will be tricky.
“We’ll be handing out colourful cards to everyone which will form the rainbow at the end.”
Anyone keen to get involved in the Rainbow Bridge Walk, which starts from the rainbow pillars under the bridge in Dundee, can visit the LGBT Youth Scotland website.
All funds raised will go towards the organisation’s Youth Work Changes Lives campaign which aims to sustain 1 to 1 LGBT support services for young people.
The services provide safe spaces for vulnerable people at moments of crisis or as they deal with the long-term impact of discrimination, rejection and isolation.
The group are also working with the organisers of next month’s Pride, which will take place on September 21.
She said: “We have lots planned for Pride. Last year it was fantastic. We just hope to get good weather because we don’t have the luxury of marquees unfortunately.
“We’re still confirming a few things including the possibility of Virtual Reality (VR) and an open mic session.”
Every year LGBT Youth Scotland delivers over 700 youth group sessions and 1300
one-to-one support sessions to more than 650 young people.
They also provide training for teachers and student teachers, helping them to support LGBTI pupils and stamp out homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying in schools.
