A Dundee youth charity providing support to vulnerable pupils is set to continue after winning council backing.
An independent evaluation found Includem’s work in Dundee provides a “positive difference” to youngsters’ lives, particularly those who face exclusion from school or going into the care system.
The charity, which provides assistance such as 24-hour helplines, has supported over 120 vulnerable youngsters in Dundee over a two-year period.
Councillors will be asked to approve further funding for the project when the children and family services committee meets on Monday.
An independent evaluation found the group had “significantly enhanced” the lives of school pupils in first to third years.
Children may be referred to the youth group for a number of reasons, including poor attendance, challenging behaviour and substance misuse.
The study found Includem’s efforts had helped prevent issues escalating, thereby reducing the likelihood of children going into care.
Pupils who have received support from the initiative have reported increases in their self-esteem and better family relationships.
Dundee City Council has since outlined their support for the Raising Attainment Includem Project, by replacing funding from the Robertson Trust.
The project will also maintain funding from the Scottish Attainment Challenge, with around £250,000 being provided.
The charity offers intensive support to school pupils in Dundee by providing continuous support, including outside of school hours and summer holidays.
Service users can also use the 24-hour helpline set up to help with issues ranging from family, behaviour or wellbeing.
Depute children and families convener Roisin Smith said: “The evaluation on this project shows how this approach is helping young people who are facing difficulties and trauma in their lives.
“It is very encouraging to see how this intensive and targeted support can help pupils to stay in school and to go on to have a better life.
“Contact with Includem workers can help them to deal with challenging issues and help them cope in difficult times.
“I am glad to see how we are making every effort to help them get on.
“All our pupils deserve the chance to make the most of their time at school, no matter what challenges they face.”
