A new housing development will be built on the site of a former Dundee care home if the city council gives the green light.
Wellburn House in Lochee will be razed to the ground and replaced with terraced, detached and semi-detached houses subject to planning permission.
Persimmon Homes, the property firm behind the plans, held a community consultation event at the Lochee United function suite and said the response so far has been positive.
The company remained tight lipped about how many homes will be built on the site and said this will be made public when the planning application is lodged with the council in November.
Persimmon’s north Scotland land director Iain McGouldrick said: “It is still early days.
“We’re consulting people on the principle of having a housing development on this site. We feel that the market is pretty strong in the area and that the area can sustain the development. There is a demand for housing in Lochee.
“The development will comprise a range of houses, from two-bedroom terraced houses to three and four-bedroom detached and semi-detached ones.”
Mr McGouldrick added there will be another chance for the public to make their thoughts known when the planning application is submitted.
He said he did not anticipate any problems with traffic in the busy Lochee area.
“There shouldn’t be a significant impact on the local roads network”, he said.
“As part of the planning process we will have to provide a transport statement and any issues will be dealt with at that stage.”
Wellburn House on Liff Road had been providing care to the elderly of Dundee for more than 150 years until it was closed by the Diocese of Dunkeld in 2017.
The site was purchased by the diocese from the Little Sisters of the Poor and closed after inspectors found issues with the home’s gas and water supplies.
The Catholic organisation has since maintained the 7.7 acre site at an annual cost of £60,000 but a conditional sale with Persimmon Homes upon the approval of planning permission has been agreed.
Lochee resident George Donnelly, 79, was one of those who turned out for the consultation event on Thursday.
He said: “We could do with more houses in Lochee but they do need to be at an affordable price.
“Wellburn is at the heart of Lochee and a really nice place to have a house.”
