Rugby players from Dundee’s senior clubs came together at the weekend to raise money for mental health support in memory of late soldier Adam Grassie.
Panmure Rugby Club hosted what is hoped will be the first annual memorial match on Saturday, raising almost ÂŁ1,000.
Players from Panmure, as well as Adam’s former team-mates at Morgan Wasps and players from Dundee High FPs and Stobswell all turned out in memory of Adam, who took his life a little over three years ago.
Adam had played as a junior player at Morgan and had served in the Royal Engineers.
The game itself finished Panmure Legends 22-17 Team Adam 15. They hope to do the match again at Forthill if it’s available again next year.
Saturday’s game was organised by Scott McIntyre, who had wanted for some time to bring together the city’s rugby community to remember Adam and raise money and awareness of mental health services.
As well as the players, family and friends turned out to watch the game, while a number of local businesses donated items for an auction which took place once the full-time whistle was blown.
Forgan’s restaurant in Broughty Ferry donated a voucher and bottle of wine and ÂŁ100 was the top prize draw.
Scott said: “I think it went really well considering it was 1pm on a Saturday. We managed to get two teams out and raised about ÂŁ865 on the day. The money will go towards Samaritans and Papyrus and will be split 50/50.
“We had about 20-30 supporters there watching the match, so that was great as well. Because it’s been so successful, we’re going to make it an annual thing and we hope to make it better each year.
“Adam’s family were there for the game and the raffle and I think they were happy that someone had put it on, and so many people had come to show their support.
“There were lots of family and friends but also some of the Panmure support there to watch the game as well.”
