Questions over Lochee swimming pool future after sudden closure

A Lochee councillor has warned there will be a local campaign “like never seen before” if the future of the local swimming baths are put at risk.

Lochee pool closed one day last week due to staff shortages and workers had to be drafted in from across Dundee yesterday to make sure it opened — albeit an hour late.

Lochee councillor Charlie Malone is now seeking as  pledge on its future being given assurances the first closure was a one off.

Dundee West MP Chris Law said he would also be pressing for answers on staffing levels.

Leisure and Culture Dundee (LCD), which runs the pool, has insisted the issues which led to the closure last week have been resolved.

However, a source close to the leisure centre said the conditions were leaving staff “very stressed” and worried about job security.

Mr Malone said: “I had been given assurances that the first sudden closure was a one off, but it seems that may not be the case.

“Staff have been asked to come early from their holidays to cover the shortages.

“This affects the viability of the pool. If people have been turning up without it being open, then they will stop going altogether.

“Obviously that would have an effect on numbers, and if that in turn is used to justify closing the pool, there will be a local campaign like never seen before in the area.”

He said the pool was a popular facility in the area and part of the historic fabric of Lochee.

“It’s another part of Lochee culture that is being stripped away,” he said.

“I will be asking questions to ensure this is not the case.”

Mr Law said he had been contacted by concerned constituents.

“I have written to LCD to seek clarity over recent unexpected closures and to receive reassurance that this will be properly addressed, and the pool will continue to open as advertised,” he said.

A LCD spokesman said: “The pool opened around one hour later yesterday due to a temporary and unforeseen staffing issue. The issue has now been resolved.”

Meanwhile, a petition has been launched calling for swimming lessons to be given seven days a week across the city ahead of proposed reduction.

The GMB union is enlisting support for its Save Our Swimming Lessons campaign.

Under the LCD plans, pools across Dundee will have their lessons cut from seven days a week to four. A spokesman has said the number of hours will increase overall.
