St Andrews University has been named one of the top 50 in the world for arts and humanities in new international rankings published on Wednesday.
The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020 ranks St Andrews 47th in the subjects, a rise of seven places from last year.
The Faculty of Arts at the Fife university comprises nine schools – art history, classics, economics, English, history, international relations, management, modern languages and philosophical, anthropological and film studies.
THE ranks 500 universities by five broad indicators: teaching, research, international outlook, income from industry and citations.
St Andrews is ranked 39th in the world for teaching, an increase of four places from 2018.
For research, it is ranked 52, up from 59 last year.
It came in 70th in the world for international outlook, which ranks the establishment’s ability to attract overseas students and staff.
The Times Higher rankings complete a successful year for St Andrews, which has seen it named UK University of the Year by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020.
It is also ranked top University in Scotland and second to Cambridge in the UK in the Guardian University Guide 2020 and top in Scotland in the Complete University Guide 2020.
The university is also top in the UK for student academic experience in the National Student Survey 2019.
