The death of a man in a Dunfermline flat is still being treated as unexplained, say police.
As officers continued their inquiries in the wake of the grim discovery in Golfdrum Street early on Tuesday morning, neighbours spoke of their shock over the incident.
The as yet unnamed man, thought to be in his 30s or 40s, was found in his ground-floor property in the Pittencrieff area of the town at around 6am by police responding to reports of concern for a person.
People living nearby said the three-storey block of flats was cordoned off as a major investigation swung into action.
CID officers began conducting door-to-door inquiries, while forensics staff in white suits were seen taking photographs and removing items from the property.
Police remained on the scene all day and into the evening, sparking fears the circumstances surrounding the man’s death could be suspicious.
Neighbours said he appeared to have lived alone.
One woman. who asked not to be named, said CID had not given her much information but added: “They were asking if anybody had heard a disturbance.
“You don’t hear a disturbance if someone just keels over and dies, do you?”
Another added: “The police said it didn’t look good.”
One local had initially thought the police were delivering a warrant when he saw the vans arrive in the morning.
“They had been to the guy’s door before but whatever’s happened is such as shame. It’s a sin,” he said.
“If it’s who I think it is, the guy who lived there was harmless.”
A police spokesperson confirmed inquiries were still ongoing.
“Officers were called to an address on Golfdrum Street in Dunfermline at around 6am on Tuesday October 15,” they said.
“The body of a man was discovered and police are treating the death as unexplained.
“Inquiries are ongoing and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
