A Fife family bakery has celebrated its 100th anniversary by shattering an unusual world record.

Fisher and Donaldson staff worked through the early hours to create the planet’s biggest doughnut wall.

The company now hopes that the wall, which smashed the current record held by an Australian bakers, will get them an entry into the Guiness Book of World Record and, more importantly, raise much needed funds for a local charity.

“What started out as a bit of fun and has turned into something a whole lot bigger,” said family member Chloe Milne.

“We attempted to set the record a few months back when we produced a similar wall for the Dundee Flower and Food Show only to find out that a day before an Australian company had beaten our total.

“Not ones to turn down a challenge we planned a new attempt to capture the record fittingly on St Andrews day in St Andrews where we have been established for years.”

Baking in Fife since 1919, Fisher and Donaldson is a Royal Warrant-holding institution and known for its traditional baking – most notably the famous fudge doughnut, handmade at its bakery in Cupar and enjoyed by Fifers and visitors from across the world.

Chloe’s sister Jade Milne came up with the idea of a doughnut wall after producing something similar, albeit smaller, as part of a commission for a recent wedding.

“At first we laughed but once we thought about it we were all determined to make it a success,” said Chloe.

Created for the St Andrews celebrations, the public were invited to come and view the finished wall and choose their very own doughnut for a small donation.

Working in conjunction with Tayside Children with Cancer and Leukaemia Charity (TCCL), a charity that Fisher and Donaldson has regularly supported, the donations from all of the doughnuts sold will go to helping youngsters across Courier Country.

Gaye Blair,  TCCL trustee, said the bakers had produced a phenomenal effort to smash the record.

“We’re so grateful to everyone involved to help the charity in such a  unique way, not only does it look and smell good, it tastes great too. We are delighted to see them as world record holders.”
