A Fife family whose car was set on fire outside their home say they have been left shocked and dumbfounded by the attack.
Police are still investigating the blaze which seriously damaged Ian and Gail Walsh’s Ford Focus.
It’s thought the fire was started deliberately close to the vehicle’s petrol tank.
The couple were inside their home in Ballingry Road, Ballingry, watching television unaware that their car was on fire until a neighbour raised the alarm.
“The first we knew of the situation was when a neighbour was banging on the front door,” said Mr Walsh.
“I couldn’t believe it when I saw my car parked on the street blazing away.
“We had heard a bang but just thought that it was the local youths that often hang around the bus shelter opposite.”
He said the couple were “totally shocked and disgusted” by the Saturday night attack and had no idea why they might have been targeted.
“It’s just lucky that the fire crews arrived before the blaze took complete hold as it could have quite easily exploded the petrol tank,” he said.
“We’ve never experienced anything like this around here before and with it being a busy main road in the local area, we just hope someone will come forward who witnessed those who are responsible.”
Mr Walsh said the car would probably have to be written off.
“It’s an inconvenience because I need to get to work but it’s also concerning that this sort of serious anti-social behaviour can happen right outside your door,” he said.
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We were alerted by police at 9.32pm on Saturday evening to a motor vehicle on fire in Ballingry.
“One appliance was dispatched from Lochgelly station and on arrival found the car to be well alight.”
Police closed off the street to allow fire crews to tackle the blaze which was extinguished a short time later.
A police spokesman said inquiries were ongoing but officers were treating the fire as deliberate.
Anyone who saw the incident or or noticed people acting suspiciously in Ballingry Road on Saturday evening is urged to come forward.
