Tributes have been paid to East Fife Football Club’s record post-war goalscorer George Dewar, who passed away last Monday.
Dewar scored 146 goals in 255 appearances with the club, after joining it from St Andrews United in 1960.
He went on to be a coach and helped the side reach the top flight in 1971.
Dewar died following a short illness and his funeral will be held on January 3.
East Fife chairman Jim Stevenson described Dewar as “an absolute club legend” and shared news of his passing with a “heavy heart”.
He said: “George was also a friend of mine, which was great because he was one of my heroes growing up.
“We recently had George at Bayview which was an absolute pleasure.
“I know that George still took an interest in the club as, when we met, he always asked how things were.”
Dewar’s grandson Louis Appéré shared his footballing talent and Dewar spent much of his time watching him play for Dundee United.
Mr Stevenson said: “He was very proud of Louis and always kept as up to date with his progress.”
After Dewar hung up his boots, he was awarded a testimonial match against a Stoke City side that included England World Cup winner Gordon Banks in November 1970, which attracted a crowd of over 6000.
A club spokesperson said: “We would like to pass on our sincere condolences to George’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
