Police in Fife have confirmed they are investigating a report of an alleged sexual assault near to the historic Dunfermline Abbey.
Officers cordoned off a section in the Kirkgate early on Sunday morning and there has been police activity in the area for most of the morning.
It is understood a woman has made the claims in relation to an incident which took place at around 3am, although no further details about the allegation have been divulged so far.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Inquiries are at an early stage and ongoing.”
There are a number of pubs and clubs within a short distance of Dunfermline Abbey in the town centre, and police hope anyone who may have seen something untoward in the early hours of Sunday morning will come forward.
The entrance to the Abbey from the Kirkgate, across the road from The Old Inn, was taped off on Sunday morning, but all of the Abbey’s other entrances remained open to members of the public as the police investigation got under way.
The Palace and Abbey, which are major tourist attractions for the town, are also open, as was the church where a service was conducted as normal on Sunday morning.
Anyone with information about the incident should contact Police Scotland on 101, or alternatively Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
