A man has died as a result of a road crash which closed a section of the M90 in Fife for almost seven hours, police have confirmed.
Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway of the motorway near Kelty shortly after 11pm on Sunday night following reports of a two-vehicle accident.
The collision involved a silver Renault Grand Scenic which struck the central reservation of the road around one-and-a-half miles north of junction four near Kelty, and a Seat Leon which had also been travelling northbound and subsequently ploughed into the Renault.
Police confirmed that a male front seat passenger in the Renault was taken to Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital for treatment but later died as a result of his injuries.
But mystery surrounds the exact circumstances behind the crash as Police Scotland refused to give any further details about the driver of the Scenic or the occupants of the Seat Leon.
No further details about the dead man were released either as enquiries were said to be ongoing to establish his identity and speak to next of kin.
Both the northbound and southbound carriageways of the M90 were closed between the Kelty junction and junction five at the B9097 Cleish/Crook of Devon turn-off as an investigation was launched, and the road finally re-opened to traffic at around 6.30am on Monday morning.
Inspector Greg Burns, of Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit, said: “We are carrying out inquiries to establish the full circumstances of this collision and would urge anyone who can help to contact police.
“We would be interested in speaking to anyone who may have seen these vehicles on the road before the collision or who may have passed the scene immediately following the incident.
“Anyone who was on the M90 and using a dashcam is asked to review their footage and let us know if you may have anything which could assist our investigation.”

The incident happened near the same spot where two police officers were seriously injured after their marked police car left the carriageway and came to rest on a grass verge on October 6.
The pair had been responding to reports of a drunk driver in Fife at the time before the BMW 330 vehicle they were travelling in crashed on the northbound carriageway near Kelty.
