Developers are pledging firebugs won’t derail their plans to build 100 new homes on the site of a former Fife secondary school.
It comes after firefighters battled a blaze at the old Viewforth High School building in Kirkcaldy’s Loughborough Road on Sunday night.
Local residents raised the alarm after noticing part of the structure was well alight around 10.50pm.
Two crews from Kirkcaldy and one from Methil were there until shortly before 12.15am on Monday.
The site has been derelict since October 2017 when a large fire broke out in the roof space of the school’s B-listed annexe, formerly known as Eastbank House.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said one seat of the latest fire had been identified in a former classroom and an investigation was under way.
The school closed at the end of the 2016 term after 108 years and pupils were relocated to the Windmill Campus in Windmill Road.
Edinburgh-based developer Whiteburn Projects has submitted a proposal of application notice to Fife Council to create a mix of three and four-bedroom homes and two-bedroom apartments by converting the original C-listed school building.
Eve McCurrich, the firm’s managing director, said: “We are aware of a fire at the former Viewforth High School in Kirkcaldy but as yet the extent of the damage it has caused, or whether this will have an impact on our plans for development is unclear.
“We would like to reassure the local community that we do remain fully committed to the project and that we will naturally provide an update as soon as we can.”
Police Scotland said no one was injured but said officers were treating the fire as suspicious.
