A Fife man has admitted pilfering hundreds of pounds worth of beef from a Glenrothes town centre store.
Steven Carruthers, of Martin Crescent, Ballingry, appeared from custody at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court where he pled guilty to stealing a quantity of meat from the Marks and Spencer Simply Food store within The Henge Retail Park in Glenrothes on Tuesday January 28.
The 49-year-old committed the offence having been granted bail at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court just a day previously.
Police revealed that Carruthers was arrested after stealing more than £250 worth of steak from the Simply Food outlet, and he had his sentence deferred until February 7 following his admission of guilt.
Carruthers has been told to appear at Dunfermline Sheriff Court for sentencing next month.
News of the bizarre theft has already raised a few eyebrows on social media, with Twitter users poking fun at the meat purloining.
One user asked “What’s his beef?”, while another said the whole thing sounded like a “stakeout”.
Another tweet praised local police for a job “well done”, and another commenter suggested it had been a “rare occurrence”.
A spokesperson for Marks and Spencer did not go into details about the incident but confirmed: “We can confirm that a theft recently took place at our Glenrothes store and we supported the police with their enquiries.”
