Police have formally identified a body found on a Fife beach over the weekend as missing Edinburgh woman Irene McArthur.
The 59-year-old’s family launched a social media campaign following her disappearance from the capital’s Little France area amid concerns for her welfare.
A passer-by is understood to have spotted the body of a woman at Lower Largo Beach at around 10.30am on Sunday morning, and police informed Ms McArthur’s relatives about the discovery.
Formal identification has now taken place and a spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed it was Ms McArthur, who was first reported missing on Wednesday February 12.
“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal,” the spokesperson added.
Ms McArthur’s niece took to social media just hours after her aunt’s body was discovered, adding: “We would appreciate it if you could give the family space to grieve.”
Tributes have also been paid to Ms McArthur on Facebook, with dozens of messages of support posted to friends and family.
One user said: “My heart goes out to you and your family.”
