The Crossgates community has rejected plans to create sports pitches on its local park.
Residents voted against proposals for School View and Humbug Park put forward by community group, Crossgates Village Park (CVP).
The result follows a six-month consultation, led independently by Fife Council, which involved gathering information on how people use the park, how they thought it could be improved and people’s thoughts on the group’s suggestions.
More than 250 people took part in the survey, with over 90% saying they used it as individuals rather than as part of an organised group.
Two thirds of people did not support the first phase of proposals which included taking over a lease and subletting to the local football team, as well as creating changing facilities, so the park could be used for football.
Just over half rejected phase two proposals that could have created an all-weather sports pitch, new play facilities and an outdoor exercise area.
There was general concern the moves could lead to a loss of accessible green space used for the village gala and other community events.
Many people suggested the park should be a more varied facility for the whole community’s use, with concern also expressed that low income families could be adversely affected by the proposed changes.
The Crossgates Village Park group has accepted the result and now intends to dissolve.
It said any money provided to it by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust would be returned.
Thanking those who took part in the consultation, a spokesperson said: “CPV have always maintained that any change should be both for Crossgates and by Crossgates, ie wanted by the community.”
Sarah Roxburgh, local community manager at Fife Council, said she was delighted to see so many people get involved in the discussion.
She added: “This has given the people of Crossgates an opportunity to share their ideas on the park proposals and its future uses.
“The consultation was able to gather a wide range of views which will help to us to make inform decisions in the future.”
