Fife’s community support services and day services for older people will close from 5pm on Friday.
Planned respite and short break provision for vulnerable people and their carers will also cease for all but the most urgent cases.
Fife Health and Social Care Partnership said risk assessments would be done to ensure contact was maintained with those deemed to be most at risk.
It said its teams were under significant pressure and were having to implement contingency plans in response to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.
The same approach will be taken by other care companies across the region.
Fife Council’s health and social care spokesman David Graham said he had been assured the approach was the safest one for the region’s most vulnerable people.
“It’s obviously a sad time when we need to temporarily close services,” the Labour councillor said.
“However, I’ve received assurances from the service that following national guidance from the Government that this was the safest way forward for our most vulnerable people.
“The service will continue to complete risk assessments to ensure those most at risk continue to receive contact from the social work service in these very challenge times for us all.”
The move follows a decision to ban visitors to local authority care homes across Fife.
Eight care homes across the kingdom have put a stop to non-essential visits in an attempt to protect residents from infection.
Other privately-owned care homes in the area had already taken similar precautions.
Essential visits by GPs and other health professionals and relatives visiting as part of end of life care will continue.
