A new care village for the East Neuk of Fife could replace demolition-marked blocks of flats in Anstruther, it is understood.
Health and social care bosses are said to be eyeing the site of the Mayview flats, after struggling to find a suitable location to replace ageing Ladywalk House care home.
Fife Health and Social Care Partnership has been talks with Fife Council’s housing services about using the cleared land for a new home and extra care housing units.
A community café and small business units may also be erected, it is believed, with the Ladywalk House site used for social housing.
The partnership said it was unable to provide further information about the option before its presentation to the council’s north east Fife area committee, which could be delayed by the coronavirus crisis.
However, news of the potential development, which could be complete by summer 2023, has been welcomed locally.
Andy Peddie, chairman of Kilrenny, Anstruther and Cellardyke Community Council, said: “We believe this is a great solution.
“The new care village will be a great asset to our community and will provide care for a range of vulnerable people across the East Neuk.”
He said partnership chief executive David Heaney and chairman Councillor David Graham had made enormous efforts to honour a promise to the community to find a site for a new care facility and praised communication with the community council.
East Neuk and Landward Liberal Democrat councillor Bill Porteous said: “This is great news for all those and their families and staff of the care home.
“I also must thank all those in the community for their endeavours in ensuring that we will continue to have a care home very close to the existing home.”
Ladywalk House is considered to be in urgent need of replacement due to its deteriorating condition.
A new building on nearby Bankie Park was ruled out amid public outcry in 2018 and redevelopment of the existing home was considered problematic.
It was decided a year ago that the four blocks in Mayview Avenue would be demolished as they had fallen into such poor condition. They were to be replaced with social housing.
