A Fife-based convenience store chain has proved size does not matter when it comes to combating the effects of the Covid-19 crisis.
Eros Retail, which has two stores in Kirkcaldy and one each in Markinch, Leven, Cardenden and Coaltown of Balgonie, has delivered 300 bottles of free hand sanitiser to Fife Council, local charities, care homes, sheltered housing and Police Scotland, as well as providing free home delivery for the over 60s, vulnerable people or those self-isolating in the community.
The company, which also has outlets in Ellon and Tillicoultry near Stirling, has also employed around 20 people who had previously lost their jobs elsewhere as a result of the outbreak, and introduced free coffee for all NHS and emergency service staff until further notice.
Managing Director, Harris Aslam, said convenience stores across Scotland were going to similar lengths to protect the communities they serve.
“Shops and businesses across the country have gone the extra mile to ensure no one in their area has been neglected,” he said.
“Our own amazing team have been working round the clock to deliver nearly 2000 packages of groceries and other household essentials which had been ordered online in the past week.
“We are determined not to let anyone down, even though the demand for deliveries is growing all the time.”
Mr Aslam said the chain had delivered hundreds of pounds worth of free groceries to a food bank and the Cottage Family Centre in Kirkcaldy; increased its support for local businesses by placing a first order with Fife-based John Henderson Meat Specialists, after its supply to high-end hotels and restaurants had collapsed; and enhanced its partnership with other local suppliers like Graham’s the Family Dairy, Fisher and Donaldson, and Raith Fruit and Flowers.
It also worked with Fisher and Donaldson to bag flour into 1kg bags and get them to customers in response to a run on flour and yeast for home bread baking.
Staff have had their pay increase brought forward by two weeks, with further bonuses planned.
