Clean water supplies have resumed to thousands of homes across Fife following four days of disruption.
Scores of homes across the Kingdom were subjected to four days of discoloured and dirty water from their taps with problems particularly bad for residents in Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy, Lochgelly, St Andrews, Methil and Newport-on-Tay.
Scottish Water said the problems were the result of a 22% increase in water demand across the region due to the hot weather that had disturbed natural sediment in the network.
The company were forced to make emergency deliveries to the most vulnerable to ensure a safe supply of drinking water.
Kes Juskowiak, Scottish Water’s national water operations manager, said: “Normal water supplies have now been restored following the discolouration issue experienced by some customers at the weekend.
“Due to the hot weather we distributed an additional 450 million litres of water to customers on Saturday and Sunday to meet demand, which placed a significant strain on our network.
“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to customers and thank them for supporting our initial messages to help protect supplies and use the water wisely.
“Where customers experience any further pockets of discoloured water, we would ask them to please contact us with details.”
