The reopening of drive-through restaurants has brought traffic jams and piles of rubbish as scores flocked to enjoy fast food for the first time since lockdown began.
Motorists faced long queues at takeaways across Fife with particular problems at Kirkcaldy Retail Park where car loads of people waited in line for up to an hour to be served.
Traffic congestion continued throughout the day as customers queued to get their hands on McDonalds or KFC food for the first time in nine weeks.
Tailbacks stretched out of the retail park onto nearby main roads during the busiest times.
Large numbers of vehicles visiting McDonalds drive-through in Glenrothes resulted in congestion on Queensway and surrounding roads in the town.
Many have since taken to social media to condemn irresponsible customers who left car the car park at Kirkcaldy retail Park strewn with litter and piles of empty wrappers and drinks cartons left discarded on pavements and roadsides.
Kirkcaldy councillor Alistair Cameron said those responsible showed a complete lack of respect for their own communities
He added: “I fully understand that many people want to enjoy a treat such as fast food for the first time since the lockdown was imposed but for some of those people who think it’s then acceptable to toss the wrappers out of the car window or onto the pavement show a total contempt for their surroundings.
“I can’t understand why some people think it’s too difficult to put the wrappers and cartons back into the bag in which they received it and simply take it home.
“It’s simply unacceptable to dump your rubbish and I urge those people to think again and do the right thing.”
A spokesperson for McDonald’s, said: “We take our responsibility around litter very seriously and we conduct a number of daily litter patrols, collecting others’ rubbish as well as our own.
“The team at Kirkcaldy Retail park will continue to be vigilant whilst on these patrols and we encourage our customers to dispose of their litter responsibly.
“We have placed one of their large bins in the Greggs/Costa area, where people tend to park up, to try make litter disposal as easy as possible.
“The retail park’s own litter pickers are also working and trying to tackle the issue.”
