People have been warned to be on their guard against an “unacceptable” coronavirus test and protect scam.
Phone calls telling householders they have to pay for a covid-19 test have been reported across the country.
The tests under the NHS test and protect programme are free to all and genuine callers will not ask for people’s bank details.
Glenrothes and Central Fife SNP MP Peter Grant urged people to be aware of the scam.
“Scam phone calls are reprehensible at the best of times but for a person, or a network of people, to phone individuals during this period of worry and uncertainty in a bid to scam them out of money is simply unacceptable,” he said.
“If someone from the test and protect team contacts you because you or someone you know has tested positive for covid-19, they won’t ever ask you for payment or bank details, any personal login details, try to access your computer remotely, ask you to download a link that they send or, most importantly, tell you the identity of the person infected.”
