Controversial Fife housing plan approved despite flooding concerns

Objections to the development were raised concerning historic flooding of the site.
Objections to the development were raised concerning historic flooding of the site.

A controversial new housing scheme has been given the go-ahead by Fife planners despite local peoples’ concerns the site poses a major flood risk.

Councillors approved the plans to build 45 new affordable homes on farmland north of Kinglassie Road, Auchterderran.

The development will feature 12 flats and 33 new homes with site access created at both Woodend Road and Kinglassie Road.

Cardenden Community Council argued that if approved, the Campion Homes proposal on behalf of Kingdom Housing Association, would be built on low lying land which is historically prone to flooding.

However, in a report to the Central and West planning committee, case officer Natasha Cockburn, said a flood assessment carried out at the site showed the new development posed no increased flood risk.

She said: “The proposals include a compensatory flood storage area to the north west of the site to mitigate this issue.

“Fife Council Flooding, Shoreline and Harbours specialists are also satisfied that there would be no increased flood risk as a result of the development.”

The application received nine objections, with Cardenden Community Council also voicing concerns the site would join three other developments in the immediate area severely impacting on local schools, health provision and other local amenities.
