Roads across Fife remained closed on Thursday as the region recovered from severe thunderstorms and torrential rain.
Flooding following Tuesday night’s storm caused widespread flooding and disruption, with an estimated 106mm of rain falling in Glenrothes, believed to have been the worst affected area, overnight.
Fife Council said road closures were still affecting stretches of the B9037 at High Valleyfield, B9130 in Thornton, Station Road in Lochgelly, B921 Kinglassie Road and a couple of minor roads.
Meanwhile, the council said all schools with the exception of St Pauls RC Primary in Glenrothes, which suffered flooding and a power cut, and Freuchie Nursery had now reopened.
Carrie Lindsay, the council’s executive director of education and children’s services, said: “Unfortunately, Freuchie Nursery Class and St Paul’s RC Primary School will remain closed.
“However, I would advise parents to continue to monitor the situation, as there have also been some transport issues today due to road closures.
“Once again I would want to thank you for your patience and understanding and we look forward to seeing your children in school as soon as possible.”
Councillor David Ross, the Labour co-leader of Fife Council, expressed his sympathy for all those affected by the adverse weather, which caused a landslide at Pettycur Bay Holiday Park in Kinghorn and damaged many properties and vehicles.
He said: “This was a truly exceptional storm that has impacted on people in Fife in many different ways. We have numerous schools closed or delayed in opening, roads closed and services disrupted.
“My thoughts are with those who have had their homes or businesses flooded, those who have had to be evacuated from Pettycur Bay and everyone will have been shocked by the sight of many cars being damaged in the flood which hit Victoria Hospital car park.”
Such was the extent of the flooding, a major incident was declared across Fife on Wednesday. This was later lifted.
Mr Ross said council staff were deployed in the early hours of Wednesday to deal with the effects of the storm.
He added: “I’d like to thank them once again for their efforts.”
